Klaviyo agency vs. engineering partner: the honest split

"Klaviyo agency" is a search term that covers two genuinely different jobs. One is creative and strategic - campaigns, design, copy, send cadence. The other is technical - event architecture, integration accuracy, attribution, deliverability infrastructure. We are the second one, on purpose, and this page exists so you know which one you're hiring before you sign anything.

What a full-service Klaviyo agency does

A full-service agency typically owns the marketing function end to end: flow and campaign strategy, email/SMS copywriting, template design, send calendar, list growth tactics, and often A/B testing on subject lines and creative. Billing is usually a monthly retainer tied to send volume or account size. This is valuable work, and if what you need is more/better campaigns, this is the right kind of partner.

What we do instead

We do not write copy, design templates, or run campaign strategy. We are a data and tracking engineering practice that works on the layer underneath the marketing function.

  • Event architecture - custom event tracking via the Events API for triggers Klaviyo doesn't capture by default.
  • Integration wiring - full-fidelity Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce integration, not just the default connector.
  • Revenue attribution - reconciling what Klaviyo reports against your source-of-truth analytics.
  • Deliverability infrastructure - authentication, list hygiene, and sending reputation diagnostics.
  • Segment data quality - profile deduplication and property hygiene so segmentation logic doesn't rot.

How to tell which one you need

If the complaint is "our flows aren't converting" or "our emails look dated," that's creative and strategy - hire an agency. If the complaint is "our Klaviyo revenue doesn't match Shopify," "we can't track a custom event," "our deliverability dropped and we don't know why," or "our segments include people who shouldn't be in them" - that's the data layer, and that's us.

Plenty of accounts need both, run in parallel by two different partners who don't compete for the same budget line, because they're not doing the same job.

Common questions

Is a Klaviyo agency the same as a Klaviyo consultant?

Not necessarily. "Agency" usually implies an ongoing retainer covering strategy, design, and send execution. "Consultant" can mean either a strategy advisor or a technical specialist - the word alone doesn't tell you which. Ask what deliverable they produce before you sign anything.

Can I hire an agency and an engineering partner at the same time?

Yes, and it's a common split: the agency owns campaign strategy, design, and copy; the engineering partner owns event architecture, integration accuracy, attribution, and deliverability infrastructure. The two roles rarely conflict because they touch different layers of the account.

How do I know if my problem is creative or engineering?

If the fix involves what the email says, how it looks, or when it sends - that's creative/strategy. If the fix involves what data triggered it, whether the revenue number is right, or whether the integration is complete - that's engineering. Most "our flows aren't converting" complaints turn out to be a mix of both, worth separating before you spend on either.

Do you get listed on Klaviyo's own partner directory?

That directory lists agencies and freelancers across the full spectrum, creative-first shops included. We don't lead with a directory listing because it doesn't distinguish engineering-only practices from full-service agencies - ask directly what a listed partner actually delivers.

Tell us the problem, we'll tell you if we're the right fit.

If it's creative or campaign strategy, we'll say so and point you elsewhere. If it's data or integration, that's the engagement.
